It is becoming more common for patients to expect to have results of tests at the time the test is performed. This is obviously beneficial for the patient as it prevents hours to days or weeks of waiting for a phone call for the results. However, it is important to consider that providing quick results also has benefits to the doctor and the medical staff.
A good example of how this benefits the doctor can be explored by using scenario for an H. pylori rapid test. These test strips are used in conjunction with a gastric biopsy procedure. The small biopsy samples are placed on an indicator pad, with some strips allowing for up to three samples to be placed on the same H. pylori rapid test strip.
Then, in just an hour, the results can be determined by the presence of a specific color over the specimen location as well as in the Positive Control spot on the strip. This not only verifies the presence of the H. pylori but also validates that the test strip was active.
The benefits of H. pylori rapid test gives a true advantage over full histological tests where multiple factors can come into play that may impact the biopsy specimen. Issues such as cross-contamination in a lab, high fluctuations in the temperature of the samples and even issues such as delays in processing the sample can cause problems with the results.
By using the test strips immediately after the biopsy, all of these very common issues can be avoided. Additionally, these tests can take as little as 60 minutes, allowing the doctor to provide accurate confirmation of the presence or absence of H. pylori to the patient. With these very quick results, the doctor also has the opportunity to discuss treatment options with the patient at the time of the results, saving the time involved with patient calls and setting additional appointments.
