For all types of transportation signals, including those used on railways and in transit systems, having reliable, bright and dependable lighting is always going to be a priority.

Choosing LED signal lights over traditional types of incandescent bulbs can save money, time and resources while also helping to boost safety across the entire system. Combining all these advantages will help transit authorities and managers to make the switch to LED lights.

The Long Life Factor

One of the critical differences with LED signal lights over traditional incandescent lighting is that the individual lamps (the lights) do not use a filament. Instead, the light is one when an electric current passes through a semiconductor in the light emitting diode (LED).

With no filament to burn out, these lights last for a much longer time than the traditional type of bulb. It is not uncommon for a LED to last for up to 50 times as long as the incandescent bulb. Compared to halogens they will last about 25 times as long and a full 10 times longer than a CFL (compact fluorescent lamp).

Stand up to Use

The LED signal lights used on railways and in transit systems use have to be reliable. These lights are often exposed to extreme weather conditions including snow, freezing rain, extreme sunlight and wind. Additionally, vibrations from trains and other equipment can create problems for traditional types of lighting options.

The design of the LED lamps is very durable. Of course, the bulbs are protected by the signal light glass, but they are also very durable on their own. These lamps can also have their own color, providing a longer lasting, more resilient and a brighter colored light than traditional lighting options.

Environmentally Friendly

Like many of the new designs in lighting options, LED lights are long lasting and therefore reduce the need to replace the bulbs. This decreases the amount of waste and recycling. At the same time, it decreases the need to have staff constantly checking the bulbs, which further saves time, man hours and money.

Finally, these are very low energy use bulbs, helping to decrease demands on the electrical systems. They can also be used with solar panels and battery backup systems, allowing the signals to stay on even during a power outage, which is an important consideration in both urban and rural areas across the country.
