Every year, students seek off-campus student housing in Baton Rouge. They’re excited to break free from dorm life and gain more independence. While off-campus housing gives students more freedom, here are some things to consider before signing a lease.

1. Tour the Apartment

Students who live out of state shouldn’t blindly apply and sign a lease for off-campus student apartments. Sometimes what’s represented online isn’t what the housing is in person. Also, if students are new to the school, they’ll want to make sure the apartment is near campus, work, etc. Take a long weekend and tour several apartments to figure out which one feels most like home.

2. Decide About the Roommate Situation

Most off-campus apartments offer 1, 2, 3, and 4 bedroom apartments. Students can pick their roommates or have the apartment complex pick them through a roommate matching selection process. The pros of having a roommate mean everyone’s rent is cheaper, but not everyone wants to live with someone else—students who wish to have a one-bedroom apartment need to make plans early because one-bedroom floorplans are limited at most places and go fast.

3. Read the Terms of the Lease

Signing a lease for off-campus student housing does leave the student with financial and legal obligations. Therefore, don’t sign leases without reading them thoroughly. Most are straightforward, detailing the total yearly rent broken down into 12 months of payments and what’s included in the rent. Some apartments might offer shorter-term leases for students who are graduating early.
