When you are considering a luxury apartment, especially luxury apartments in San Diego and other high cost areas, you want to make sure you are getting the best apartment for your money. While the amenities of a luxury apartment are a big factor, you also need to consider other factors, such as comfort and noise level. You will certainly want to check these couple of things.
If you are paying for a luxury apartment, then you don’t want to be able to hear your neighbors do you? Try to emulate the noise control. Have someone go in another room and yell with the door closed and see if you can hear them. If you can, but not well then this is a good sign. If possible you should also check how loud the upstairs neighbors can be. If you are lucky they will be home and active, and you can get a real world example of what to expect. If the apartment is vacant you should see if the property manager will let someone walk around while you listen below. Have them really stomp so you know what is the worst you should expect.
This one will be a bit more difficult to check, but it is worth it. You don’t want to move into your apartment and learn that it doesn’t retain heat or you can’t keep it cool in the summer. Poor insulation will not only make you uncomfortable, but it will also increase your heating and cooling costs substantially. To check the insulation, ideally do this on a very hot da. Place the back of your hand on an outside wall facing the sun if possible. The wall should be nice and cool, then check other random spots. The temperature should be uniform throughout. If you find that some areas are warmer than others check outside, there may be a shadow over part of the wall. If the temperature varies a lot this is a sign it is poorly insulated and will give you issues.
