While there will be times that your child needs to go to the Emergency Room, there will be others when (s)he simply needs a check-up or quick bandage. In these moments, it can be nearly impossible to schedule an appointment with your pediatrician. Fortunately, urgent care facilities are designed specifically for this purpose, and are able to provide care for a wide range of illnesses and injuries. Among others, the following are opportune times to bring your little one to UC:
Vomiting and Diarrhea
An unfortunate side effect of a wide variety of conditions, vomiting and diarrhea is rarely a cause for concern. Unless there is blood in your child’s vomit or stool, or symptoms have persisted for over 24 hours, UC is generally appropriate to determine the best method of care.
Concussion (Without Lack of Consciousness)
Unlike obvious head trauma, headaches after an injury could indicate a mild concussion. To be sure, UC can appropriately treat your little one. If a headache or head injury was accompanied by fever, stiff neck, or weakness/numbness, take your child to the ER.
A common childhood experience, ear aches can cause discomfort for little ones of all ages. From the first sign of pain (particularly crying in infants), an urgent care physician can either prescribe treatment or determine the best level of care before symptoms worsen.
Potentially a sign of strep, you’ll want to take your child to urgent care if (s)he complains of a sore or scratchy throat. Not only is the Streptococcus bacteria highly contagious, but can lead to severe complications if left untreated.
Fever with Cold Symptoms
Paired with cold symptoms, a fever is often an indicator of the flu, for which a UC physician can prescribe an appropriate medication. If accompanied by red flags such as seizures, difficulty breathing, or pain in your neck or abdomen, take your child to the ER.
