Dental implants are the next best thing to natural teeth. As the implant is fused with the jawbone, it provides a strong, stable platform on which to mount a crown. It is impossible to tell a dental implant from a natural tooth. When the implant procedure is carried out by an experienced dental professional in Lincoln Park; the new tooth looks, feels, and functions like the natural tooth it replaces. Dentures and bridges lead to bone loss and often interfere with eating and speaking.
The Implant Procedure
The actual implant is a titanium screw. Implants can be used in both the upper and lower jaw; they are surgically implanted directly into the bone. There are three specific stages of the procedure:
* Once the site is prepared, the implant is placed in position. For the next four to six months the implant will remain covered. During this time, the bone and implant become one.
* Once the implant and bone have fused, it is uncovered. At this stage, the dentist will attach a post or extension. After several more months, the tissue will have healed.
* The implant is now ready to accept an artificial tooth. A crown is prepared and attached to the post. Once these three stages have been completed, the patient has a perfect replica of the missing natural tooth.
Many people find a denture to be uncomfortable, and in some cases, even impossible. When fitting a bridge, the adjacent teeth must be ground down, which invariably weakens them and can lead to decay. Implants will not induce a “gag reflex,” nor do adjacent teeth need to be involved. An implant is truly as good as a natural tooth.
A good candidate for implants is in good general health, has healthy gums and enough bone to support the implant. Regular checkups and a commitment to good oral hygiene are important.
