Ask Your Cincinnati Jeweler How to Properly Clean Your Fine Jewelry

Whether your jewelry has sentimental value or you have just purchased it because you like the style, cleaning it properly is imperative if you want to keep it in pristine condition. The last thing you want is for the sparkle or shine to diminish, or to damage the metal that is used. Fine jewelry can often be very delicate, so you need to be careful with the cleaning process that is used. Gems and metals cannot always be treated the same way where cleaning is concerned, so great care needs to be taken.

Silver often tarnishes, gold can fade of discolor, gemstones can be scratched, and other damage can occur if the right cleaning agents and materials are not used. Sterling silver has a rhodium coating to prevent tarnishing, but it can still be prone to damage. The following are good ways to clean your jewelry, to ensure that it holds its luster for years to come:

  • Cold Water Soaks. In a small container, mix half part ammonia and half part water. Soak your jewelry in this solution for around 30 minutes. Do not leave your jewelry in the solution any longer than 30 minutes, or damage could occur. Rinse the solution off with warm water and pat your jewelry dry. This method should not be used on jewelry that contains copper, because the metal can erode if it comes into contact with ammonia.
  • Detergent Baths. To clean your jewelry with a detergent bath, simply blend warm water and mild detergent in a bowl. Immerse your jewelry in the solution, and brush it with a small eyebrow brush. Rinse well and pat dry after it has been soaked. This method should not be used for any type of strung jewelry such as pearls or ivory.
  • Ultrasonic Cleaners. Ultrasonic machines are plentiful on the marketing and they use a high frequency turbulence that will clean jewelry that is in a mixture of detergent and water. Many jewelers do not believe these machines are safe, so it is important to read the instructions carefully to know if your jewelry will be safe with this cleaning method.

Whatever type of cleaning method you use, it is important to consult with jewelers in Cincinnati, Ohio first. They will know what types of methods will be best for your particular needs. All types of gemstones and metals are not cared for the same, so you must do your research first.
